CENTRAL LONDON COMMERCIAL PROJECT
Office amenity space, influenced by modern Japanese garden design – completed 2007

The client a major property asset management company approached me in late Autumn 2007 and asked me to produce a scheme, that would highlight and disguise what was a dull space outside an office in Holborn in the centre of London. It was also a device to improve the marketing of the space to potential customers.

This was to include some café style seating and tables to enable the staff to use the space as an extension to the offices and a meeting space. The area is in a dark basement, so it also required a lighting scheme to attract the occupants to use it.

I had to create a screened area to hide external air conditioning units and installed an irrigation system to ensure that the plants received sufficient water to sustain them.

The core of the design revolved around the planting and the use of large glass fibre containers. The elliptical planters laid out randomly around the bamboos were meant to emulate the falling leaves of the bamboo.

The lights were all low energy units, including wall washer located behind the bamboo’s that alternated their colour to create a changing ambient environment.
