Zen Gardens are a place of peaceful contemplation.
A karesansui, Japanese rock garden, or Zen garden is an enclosed shallow sandpit containing sand, gravel, rocks, and occasionally grass or other natural elements.
The main elements of karesansui are rocks and sand, with the sea symbolized not by water but by sand raked in patterns that suggest rippling water. Plants are much less important (and sometimes nonexistent) in many karesansui gardens. Karesansui gardens are often, but not always, meant to be viewed from a single, seated perspective.
A note about Shirakawa-suna - Gardens in Kyoto have historically used "Shirakawa-suna". This is the name given to a type of grey black-speckled granite and is a mix of three main minerals, white feldspar, grey quartz, and black mica which matches the style for Zen gardens. Shirakawa-suna also has an eroded texture that alternates between jagged and smooth. Our Silver Grey Granite is a very close match to this. Shirakawa-suna gravel is no longer extracted in Japan.
