RICHMOND UPON THAMES
Small Modern Courtyard Garden – completed 2010
At the point of commission from the client, he asked for a Japanese styled garden with a traditional feel. I actually prepared two proposals a traditional approach along with the other modern, that I felt it was more appropriate in this context. The client upon seeing the schemes agreed that a more modern approach was more suitable; as he wanted to keep the design as minimal as possible. The scheme indicated here is the final proposal upon which the scheme is based.
The garden has only three key plants a Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris), Acer palmatum ‘Ashai-zuru’ and a Wisteria floribunda ‘Alba’. Under planted with Japanese wind grasses, fern’s, dwarf Ophiopogon’s and moss. The key area has a triple rock feature set in the gravel ‘sea’. The main tree’s being planted in the hills at the back of the garden. The background to the hills is vertical green oak boarding.
The decking outside the door is cedar decking and sitting in front of this is the ‘Chozubachi’ water basin.
As a very new garden it lacks ‘sabi’ and this will come as the garden matures, along with the development of the cloud pruned Pine and shaped Acer that will add maturity when the garden develops. Also the development of the moss will be a challenge both for the client and myself to establish.
The garden is very much a scroll garden being viewed from one position only inside the house.
