Handmade Hardwood Zen Master Gravel Rake Traditional Dogtooth Pattern - other sand patterns available
We make two styles of rake
Zen Master Rake Specification
The rake blade is approx 60cm wide, the pitch (distance between points) on the teeth is normally 120mm
Zen Student Rake Specification
The rake blade is approx 30cm wide, the pitch (distance between points) on the teeth is normally 120mm
The Student rake is particularly useful for smaller detailed work
The softwood rake handle is set at a natural angle to allow the blade of the rake to meet the gravel. Please look at the illustrative diagrams of the pitch below
We can also supply the rake blade as a
Solus (wave shaped)
Medium V ( a smaller V shape at approx 100mm pitch - useful if you want patterns in shallower gravel)
Small V ( a smaller V shape at approx 60mm pitch - this matches in well with the standard pitch at half the size)
Plain ( for general smoothing)
These are most useful for finer materials such as silica sand or H Grit
To avoid damage in transit, we may ship the rake for you to assemble - this is very easy but a small amount of wood glue may be required ( not included)

Why do we rake?
There are many ideas on the reason for raking - here are a few
Security - The sound of gravel underfoot alerted guards to potential intruders around the Imperial Palaces and they could be tracked by the disturbance in the raked patterns
Imagery - Raking can represent water, clouds, air movements, fire
Pastime - It is very relaxing to rake gravel and you can become engrossed in the task
Work - Raking can be seen as a job to do
