This large and impressive granite lantern Sangatsu-do is a classic ancient tachi-gata or pedestal type lantern and is used at Japanese Buddhist temples as the carvings on the sides relate, used as a guardian to the entrance of the temples, and also throughout Japan can be seen at the entrance to many tea gardens.
