Invented in China, possibly two and a half thousand years ago, the vessel is described as a 'Chinese Fish Basin' or 'Spouting Bowl'
When filled with water and placed on a wet towel or on grass, the bowl is made to perform by rubbing the two handles with wetted palms of the hand. A resonant note grows from the hand action on the handles
Due to the harmonics caused by the rubbing of the handles, the water surface begins to ripple around the rim, first lightly, then vigorously. Soon water drops shoot up, quickly becoming continuous streams, like tiny fountain jets. The mixture of water droplets and jets grows and diminishes with each rub of the handle.
It is suggested that Oriental Princesses would use this as their form of exercise, jogging or our modern day equivalents would have been frowned upon.
Note: The basins are made from an alloy type metal which may contain small iron deposits. We recommend that water is not kept in these decorative vessels for any length of time otherwise discolouration and rusting will occur
