Garden Showcase - Pine Lodge Garden - open every day of the year - 10am to 5pm
"The whole place is a wonderland . ." The Times 13th May 2000
We are incredibly pleased to present the Pine Lodge garden (www.pine-lodge.co.uk) as part of our Japanese showcase section.
Garden Overview
Started in the early 1980's, Mr & Mrs Raymond Clemo began in earnest to create something of true beauty. having been open to the general public for over 15 years, the garden is host to over 6,000 species of plant life. The history of the land goes back to the tin and mining era of 1830, as was discovered while developing the Japanese garden when a digger opened up a deep mineshaft.
Pine Lodge Gardens is pleased to announce that the gardens will be open every day of the year - 10am to
5pm
The garden's sheer size should not be underestimated. Below is a list of some of the garden areas within Pine Lodge.
Take a interactive tour around the garden.
Japanese Garden
'Turning Japanese, take inspiration from a wonderful Oriental garden hidden in deepest Cornwall, authentic down to the last pebble'; Sarah Miles - 'Perfect Homes' , May 2004
Over the last two or three years the Japanese garden has gradually been taking shape. One of its outstanding features, the lake - overlooked by the Summer House, is pictured below. It was photographed on a beautifully sunny day in late October 2001. Compare this with the earlier photograph lower down this page. Visits to Japan have been made in order to look at gardens, as well as reading and taking advice from Japanese garden designers to create a incredibly satisfying experience.
Work on the Japanese garden entrance and the area to the rear of the Summer House is proceeding well despite the wet conditions experienced earlier this year.
This is definitely a garden style which requires a great deal of extra consideration for the garden's overall structure as well as in the planting. The placing of the stonework has now been completed. Visitors returning to Pine Lodge will find that the planting scheme is now maturing well
Water Garden and Wildlife lake
The additional land, purchased in 1992, was an unused meadow with a bog on the lower slopes. This was transformed with a forager and swing shovel so that there is now a view of which "Capability Brown" might have approved. The lake is now home to a family of black swans and many wild ducks.
Formal Garden
The Formal garden has been re-paved with cobbles re-cycled from an old station platform. It has taken three men over five weeks to lay 8000+ granite cobble stones for the circular feature and the three radiating paths.
The three beds on the circle feature a rainbow inspired colour scheme. A temporary planting scheme for the central bed will be put into effect shortly
